Rafael de la Uz
Rafael de la UZ is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker born in Havana, Cuba. In 1998, I earned a degree in Cinematography from the world-renowned International School of Film and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. As Producer and Cinematographer, In 2016, De la Uz co-founded 42nd Parallel Films, a production company that focused primarily on producing films for the prestigious PBS series “American Experience.” With 42nd Parallel Films, De La Uz worked as Producer and Cinematographer for several films broadcasted on National television. De la Uz’s first documentary film was “The Cuban Game,” directed by Manuel Martin Cuenca. This feature- length documentary won international acclaim and awards from film festivals worldwide, including LaCinemaFe in New York and the BBC's Grierson Award. After relocating to the USA, Rafael worked as a producer in “Venezuela, Revolution in Progress,” a production of Discovery/Times TV, “Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq” for HBO, and “Roads to Memphis” (American Experience).
In 2010, Rafael resumed his collaboration with director Martin Cuenca, and he worked as Director of Photography on “Carillo, Communist,” a 2010 Goya Award nominee and Turia Film Festival winner for Best Documentary of the Year, and the feature film “La Mitad de Óscar (Half of Oscar).” 2011 Rafael was awarded Best Cinematography at the Festival du Cinema Espagnole Toulouse, France 2011, for La Mitad de Oscar (Half of Oscar). De la Uz lives and works in Alaska, where he has been documenting stories for different media organizations, like Voice of America, Fern Magazine, and Biographic. Rafael de la Uz is currently co- producing a documentary film for Alaska Public Media about the effects of hatcheries on the population of wild salmon in the Pacific Ocean. This project was awarded with a grant from the prestigious Pulitzer Center, and it’s scheduled to be broadcast on national television in the summer of 2024
In 2023, De La Uz received a prestigious Rasmuson Projects Award.
